FAQ

The Social > FAQ
These are a few of the questions that parents are wondering about as they consider attending The Social with their kids. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us through our form or by email.
We do not provide instruction for academics in standard subjects like math or language arts. However, our activities and projects reinforce many areas of academics that students are learning at home. This is a very intentional part of our program as our experience indicates that students need less assessment and more exploration and play. As students progress through our program, we begin to identify gifts and interests and encourage the development of these abilities. A more formal assessment of skills begins in our middle school program, but there are no graded activities. For more questions about this approach and why we don’t provide academics or grading, contact us.
We encourage parents to stay in the vicinity of our location in the event the student needs a parent to be present. We encourage parents to take a break at the coffee shop or spend time in the library if they have younger siblings. We have a moms coffee group led by our team that helps parents along the journey of building the best education experience for their children. We encourage all moms to participate.
We will be following seasonal and holiday themes for some projects. Along with free time, students will participate in hands-on activities that may be collaborative and include problem solving tasks that encourage creativity and exploration. Both our K-5 and 6-8th grade programs use PBL (Project Based Learning) methods. For example, K-5 students might explore butterflies and develop a new habitat, including visiting Frederik Meijer Gardens. Our Middle School program also uses PBL and works through a problem-solving process used in vocational settings. Our high school program provides skill-based programs to explore various vocations.

Under extenuating circumstances where a student can no longer attend due to unexpected events, refunds may be considered. Please communicate via email to margo@thesocialzeeland.org or by phone to 616-820-9186.

We follow all legal mandates from the State of Michigan. Property owners may also enact rules in the space we are using. We respect the right of participants to wear face coverings or not to. We encourage staying home if sick (fever-free for 24+ hours before returning).
If you miss a day, you will still be charged for the absence. If you decide to no longer attend, you will not be charged. Once you cancel, another parent may take your place from the wait list.
Our online program is launching this fall of 2026.
Yes, we encourage parents to participate as you feel comfortable. While space is limited, students will take priority if we reach capacity.
Not on a regular basis. Some holiday themes may include food, which will be communicated. We follow a strict nut-free policy for all food brought into the facility.
1st through 8th grade are welcome. We have flex programming for 4th and 5th graders interested in middle school programming. We don’t like to limit students based on grade levels as all students progress differently.
We use Love and Logic, a method that encourages a calm and non-confrontational way to manage situations. We also use Growth Mindset strategies to encourage self-confidence and positive language.
