Program Description

NatureWorks

This hands-on, project-based science class invites elementary students to explore the living world through farming, plants, animals, and food. Students will investigate how food grows from soil to table, care for plants, and learn how farms support both people and ecosystems. Through seasonal projects, they’ll discover how animals survive winter, identify their tracks, explore adaptations like fur, feathers, and hibernation, and compare life on the farm across the year. They will make their own farm to table kid-friendly food. Learning happens through building, observing, experimenting, and creating—encouraging curiosity, problem-solving, and a deeper connection to nature and where our food comes from.

This is an indoor-outdoor hybrid program. Each project unit will include 4-6 weeks of indoor learning, followed by an on-site outdoor exploration day. On these scheduled outdoor days, we will meet at a different location within 20 minutes of The Social. Parents are responsible for dropping their child off and picking their child up at this outdoor location; The Social does not provide transportation. These outdoor explorations are scheduled for the same day and time: Tuesdays from 12:15pm - 2:15pm, and the fees for these are included in the program fee.

Please note: due to the indoor-outdoor nature of this program, during normal class time we will be utilizing local parks, outdoor spaces, or businesses that are within 1-2 blocks walking distance of The Social. Parents will be notified ahead of time when and where we will be walking. Students attending Mini-Makers on Tuesday mornings can bring their lunch and eat it at The Social between classes.
